SIM lock:

A sim lock, network-lock, CARRIER-LOCK, IMEI LOCK or (Master) subsidy lock is really a technical restriction built into CDMA and GSM mobile phones by producers for use by carriers to limit the use of these phones to particular countries and/or networks. This is in contrast to a cell phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not enforce any SIM limitations.SIM locking is incredibly common if subsidized handsets are sold with prepay contracts. You should to note, however, that the technology linked with the phone will have to be compatible with the systems used by the network carrier. A GSM cellular phone is only going to function with a GSM carrier and will not work on a CDMA network. Moreover, a CDMA mobile phone can only work with a CDMA network and will never operate on a GSM network. Note that newer (2013 onwards) higher priced cell phones are capable of supporting both CDMA and GSM technologies, allowing for customers to utilize their smartphones on any sort of network.

Unlocking Technology:

Usually, a locked mobile will show a message if a restricted SIM is used, asking for the unlock code. On new phone models operating on Google android software, the cellphone is going to display a message stating “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it is network locked. Windows phones will show the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Other models may display assorted messages such as "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or in some instances the mobile will simply present a message stating that it is locked. After a valid code is entered, the device displays "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

Most of the time a SIM-locked phone is marketed at a significantly reduced cost than an unlocked one simply because the company plans income via its service. SIM locks are employed on more affordable (pay-as-you-go) units, while special discounts on higher priced handsets demand a subscription that provides guaranteed income. Unlocked devices have a greater market value.

Unlocking Services:

A certain amount of companies offer a IMEI phone unlocking service . This service needs individuals who would like to unlock a mobile phone to give their IMEI number to a unlocking company and often they will also require the country and network the handset is locked to, either sent by email or submitted on their web site. The organization will then provide (for a fee) an unlock code for the mobile phone handset.
